A 1-hr presentation entitled Cued Speech: An Effective Approach to Language Acquisition is available for groups interested in an overview of Cued Speech and its effectiveness. The presentation is provided free of charge for groups of 10 or more. The presentation is generally aimed at professionals but can also be tailored to fit the needs of parent groups.

Cued Speech: An Effective Approach to Language Acquisition

Cued Speech is a phonemically-based speechreading system which allows a deaf person to see and distinguish every spoken syllable. Its use can aid spoken language development and reading comprehension in deaf children. In this presentation, we will outline the history of the development of Cued Speech and identify the motivation for the creation of such a system. We will explain the fundamentals of Cued Speech production, demonstrating how the cues disambiguate sounds which can be confused by speechreading alone. We will also present research results regarding the language development of Cued Speech users. In addition, national and local resources for obtaining information and support will be reviewed.

Presentation team will typically include a USF faculty member or a nationally certified Instructor of Cued Speech.

As part of our outreach effort to parents in the Tampa Bay community, we offer 2-hour information sessions on the USF campus about twice a year. These sessions are free of charge and open to the public but are specifically geared towards parents of children who are deaf or have other difficulties with phonemic awareness.

Sessions provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • learn about Cued Speech as a communication option and the various ways that it can be used to support language and literacy goals and/or auditory training and speech goals.
  • review research that describes the advantages of Cued Speech as an effective tool for communication, and as a tool for facilitating development of language and literacy skills.
  • meet cueing families (parents and children) and hear their perspectives on Cued Speech.
  • network with other parents who are exploring communication options for their children.

Dates for the next information session are not yet available. Contact us to let us know you are interested, and we will notify you when the event is scheduled.
